Tournament Rules & Regulations
I. Tournament Registration
1. Tournament registration is open until 11:59 pm EDT on Wednesday, March 17, 2021. Please register through the link provided on the main tournament page.
2. The fee to register is $5 per person. This fee is used to partially cover the cost of the tournament prizes. Limited fee waivers for those with financial difficulties may be possible. Please contact mahjong@brown.edu.
3. Registration is mandatory to participate in the tournament. Exceptions may only be made at the discretion of the tournament organizers.
4. The tournament is open to all students attending a university in the United States or Canada.
5. There are no refunds on the tournament fee except in the case of cancellation of the entire event by the event organizers.
II. General Tournament Logistics
1. The tournament will be held from roughly 1 pm - 5 pm EDT on Saturday, March 20, 2021.
2. The tournament will be held completely online through Zoom and an online mahjong platform. More details will be sent to tournament participants closer to the tournament date.
3. In order to encourage new players to participant in the tournament, a mahjong tutorial event may be held the day before the tournament upon the request of participant(s).
4. The tournament format will be a round robin. More detail on tournament logistics will be posted on the Logistics page closer to the event.
5. The tournament will include an opening ceremony, gameplay, and a closing ceremony/awards ceremony.
III. Mahjong Style
1. The tournament will be played using modified Hong Kong Rules.
2. Please note Brown University Mahjong Club's Simplified Mahjong Rules will not be used in the tournament.
3. Modifications to Hong Kong Rules include the elimination of points-based scoring (players will be scored based on number of wins only, no points will be lost for losing) and the elimination of flowers/bonus tiles. For full rule modifications, please view the Rules page (coming soon).
4. Due to technology limitations, the online mahjong platform may continue to be displayed in Hong Kong Rules, however, our modified scoring system will take precedent.
5. More information regarding rules will be sent to participants closer to the event.
IV. Prizes and Awards
1. The grand prize of the tournament is a new 32GB iPad (8th generation). Winner will get a choice of color (Space Gray, Silver, or Gold) as well as the option to add an engraving to the back.
2. The second prize is a new pair of AirPods with Charging Case (2nd generation).
3. Additionally, Amazon gift cards of various to-be-decided denominations will be given based on the number of tournament participants registered. This will be announced after the closure of tournament registration.
4. Prizes will cover full merchandise cost, shipping, and sales tax. However, the necessity for tax reporting will be the responsibility of tournament winners.
5. Due to limitations, prizes may only be shipped within the United States. Some limited exceptions may apply and will be determined on a case-by-case basis by tournament organizers.
