Mahjong is an Increasingly Global Game with
Many Regional Variations
Brown University Mahjong Club was established with the mission to teach and promote the game to the Brown University community and among university students nationwide. With the many different rules being played around the world, all with varying degrees of complexity, we set out to create our own mahjong rules specifically designed for new mahjong players in university.
For Brown University Mahjong Club meetings, we will use our club-developed Brown University Mahjong Club Simplified Mahjong Rules (Brown SMR). Mahjong should be thought of as a fun, recreational game that can be applied to more competitive settings. We believe having simplified rules that still encapsulates the essence of the traditional game and styles will allow us to accomplish our goal. Please note our upcoming Brown University Mahjong Tournament will be using modified Hong Kong Rules rather than Brown SMR Rules.
The Brown SMR can be viewed digitally for free below. Additionally, a Paperback Book Format is also available on Amazon for purchase (also see link below). Please note we do not make any profit from sales of this resource. 100% of the cost goes to printing and shipping this resource. You can also download and print our Brown SMR Mahjong Scoring Sheet below.
Throughout the academic year, we will also be hosting meetings where students can learn to play mahjong. Please be on the lookout for that under our Upcoming Events page. Additionally, we hope to provide video mahjong tutorials in the near future.
