Tournament Rules & Regulations
I. Tournament Registration
1. Tournament registration is open until 5 pm EST on Thursday, November 11, 2021. Please register through the link provided on the main tournament page.
2. The fee to register is $5 per person. This fee is used to partially cover the cost of the tournament prizes. Limited fee waivers for those with financial difficulties may be possible. Please contact mahjong@brown.edu.
3. Registration is mandatory to participate in the tournament. Exceptions may only be made at the discretion of the tournament organizers.
4. The tournament is open to all students attending a university in the United States or Canada.
5. There are no refunds on the tournament fee except in the case of cancellation of the entire event by the event organizers.
II. General Tournament Logistics
1. The tournament will be held from roughly 6 pm - 9 pm EST on Saturday, November 13, 2021. Participants are expected to arrive between 5:45 pm and 6 pm and must arrive before 6:10 pm.
2. The tournament will be held in person in the Underground, i.e. below the Blue Room.
3. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brown University's latest safety protocols must be observed throughout the event and when on Brown University property. At present, this include mask wearing except when eating and drinking.
4. The tournament format will be a combination of free play + points and bracket elimination. More detail on tournament logistics is posted on the Format & Logistics page and will be explained in detail during the event.
5. The tournament will include an opening ceremony, gameplay, and a closing ceremony/awards ceremony.
6. Photos may be taken during the tournament for Brown University Mahjong Club's marketing purposes. Registration for the tournament constitutes consent of your images to be used by Brown University Mahjong Club for this purpose. If you wish for us to not take photos of you, please let us know while checking-in during the event.
7. Dinner will be served before we begin gameplay. If you have any food allergies and/or dietary restrictions, please inform them to us in the box on the registration page or via email at mahjong@brown.edu at least before 5 pm EST on Thursday, November 11, 2021.
III. Mahjong Style
1. The tournament will be played using modified Hong Kong Rules.
2. Please note Brown University Mahjong Club's Simplified Mahjong Rules will not be used in the tournament.
3. Modifications to Hong Kong Rules include the elimination of point deductions based on other players' wins and the elimination of flowers/bonus tiles. For full rule modifications, please view the Rules page.
4. The tournament organizers are responsible for keeping score and have final authority over scoring.
5. A detailed explanation of rules will be given at the event.
IV. Prizes and Awards
1. Prizes will include a set of mahjong (144 tiles, black tiles, large tile size), a new pair of Apple AirPods with Charging Case (2nd generation), a Google Nest Mini (graphite), and a $50 Amazon gift card.
2. First place will get first choice of the prizes, second place will get second choice, third place will get third choice, and fourth place will get the remaining prize.
3. Prizes will be given at the conclusion of the tournament or in the case of prize(s) not arriving in time, will be delivered to the prize winner at a later date and time, arranged at the convenience of the prize winner. The necessity for tax reporting will be the responsibility of tournament winners.
4. Prize options may be changed at any time at the discretion of the tournament organizers.
